How much does a WhatsApp AI assistant cost in Sri Lanka?
Straight numbers for Sri Lankan business owners: what a WhatsApp AI assistant costs each month, what WhatsApp itself charges, what you get back, and how to know it will not let your customers down.
Short Answer
As of October 2026, ready-made WhatsApp AI assistants in Sri Lanka are advertised from about Rs 8,000 a month for chat, and from about Rs 18,000 a month if they also answer WhatsApp calls. If you want one set up for you, trained on your prices and able to take bookings, expect a one-off setup fee on top.
WhatsApp's own charges are small for most businesses. Replying to customers costs well under a rupee per message, and the first 1,000 replies each month are free.
What You Are Paying For
- -The monthly fee. This covers the assistant answering your chats, usually with a cap on how many chats a month.
- -Setup. Someone has to write down your real prices, timings and policies, connect your booking calendar, and test the replies in English, Sinhala and Tamil. Some tools leave this to you. Others do it for you.
- -WhatsApp's own charges. These are billed by WhatsApp, not the provider. See below.
What WhatsApp Itself Charges
At WhatsApp's October 2026 Sri Lanka rates:
- -Replies to customers who messaged you: first 1,000 a month free, then well under Rs 1 each
- -Booking confirmations and reminders you send first: well under Rs 1 each
- -Promotional broadcasts: roughly Rs 24 each, so this is where costs climb
If you mainly reply to customers and send reminders, WhatsApp's share of the bill is usually a few hundred rupees a month.
What You Get Back
The point is not the bot. It is what stops slipping through the cracks:
- -Enquiries answered in seconds, including at 11pm, on Sundays and on Poya days
- -Staff no longer copying and pasting the same price list all day
- -Bookings captured from people who would have gone to the next place that replied
- -A clear count of how many enquiries came in and how many turned into bookings
A quick way to judge the cost: if one booking is worth Rs 15,000 to you, an assistant at Rs 8,000 a month pays for itself the first month it saves one lost booking. Use your own numbers.
Will It Work Reliably?
These are the things that actually go wrong, and what to ask about each:
- -It makes up a price or a time slot. Ask: does it only answer from information I give it, and what does it do when it does not know?
- -It replies in poor Sinhala or Tamil. Ask to see it answer your own past customer messages, including Singlish ones, before you pay.
- -Your number gets blocked. Cheap tools that run on your phone's WhatsApp through unofficial software risk this. Ask: is it built on WhatsApp's official business connection?
- -It goes silent. Assistants on the official connection run online, not on a phone, so they keep working when a staff phone is off or out of charge.
How To Trust It Before You Rely On It
- -Test it on last month's real messages from your customers
- -Start with nights and weekends only, then expand once you are happy
- -Make sure staff can read every chat and step in at any moment
- -Make sure customers are told a person will reply when the assistant hands over
- -Ask for a simple weekly report: chats answered, bookings made, chats passed to staff
- -Your customer list and chat history should stay yours if you leave
Do You Even Need One?
The free WhatsApp Business app is enough if you get a handful of messages a day and reply within minutes. You probably need an assistant if:
- -Customers tell you "I messaged and no one replied"
- -Messages come in at night and wait until morning
- -One staff member's phone is your whole booking line
- -Staff answer the same five questions all day: price, availability, location, timings, how to book
Next Step
Write down the ten questions your staff answer most on WhatsApp, and roughly how many messages go unanswered each week. That is enough to work out whether an assistant is worth it.
Talk to Ether Labs and we will test an assistant against your own customer messages before you pay anything. If the free app is enough for you, we will say so.
Common questions
How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost in Sri Lanka?
As of October 2026, ready-made WhatsApp AI assistants in Sri Lanka are advertised from about Rs 8,000 a month for chat, and from about Rs 18,000 a month if they also answer WhatsApp calls. A done-for-you setup that takes bookings, not just answers questions, usually adds a one-off setup fee.
Does WhatsApp charge businesses for messages in Sri Lanka?
A little. Replying to customers who message you is free for the first 1,000 replies a month, then well under one rupee per reply. Booking confirmations and reminders you send first also cost well under a rupee each. Promotional broadcasts are the expensive part, at roughly Rs 24 per message at WhatsApp's October 2026 Sri Lanka rate.
Can my WhatsApp number get banned for using a bot?
It can if the bot runs through unofficial software attached to the normal WhatsApp app. Assistants built on WhatsApp's official business connection are allowed, which is why you should always ask a provider which one they use.
Do I keep my existing WhatsApp number?
In most cases, yes. Ask the provider whether you can also keep using the WhatsApp Business app on your phone alongside the assistant, because that depends on how it is set up.
What if the assistant gives a customer a wrong answer?
A good assistant only answers from the prices, timings and policies you give it, and passes anything it is unsure about to a staff member instead of guessing. You should be able to read every conversation and take over at any time.
